Serious question, my neighbor in Sacramento told me to just caulk over the rot under my sink and now there's a 3 inch gap

I noticed soft wood under the kitchen sink last April and my neighbor Dave said to skip replacing it, just lay down a fat bead of silicone and paint over it, it'll hold fine. Fast forward to last Tuesday and the whole cabinet bottom gave out while I was doing dishes, water everywhere, and now I'm staring at a 3 inch gap straight into the crawlspace with mushrooms growing in it. Do I rip out the whole cabinet base or can I sister in new plywood and pretend this never happened?
