Can we talk about how a $3 plastic scraper saved my kitchen faucet after 2 hours of crying
So last Saturday I tried to swap out the cartridge on my Moen faucet in the bathroom. Got the handle off fine, then the retaining nut would not budge, so I sprayed it with WD-40 and waited. Came back, cranked it with pliers, and snapped the whole stem off inside the valve body. Ended up calling a plumber in Sacramento who charged $180 to pull the broken piece out with a $3 plastic scraper and a pick. What is the dumbest tool that fixed a mess you made worse?
This is the same story as every "simple fix" in life. You fight something for hours with force, make it worse, then some guy walks in with the cheapest tool on the truck and pops it loose in ten seconds. Happens with stripped screws, clogged drains, tangled Christmas lights, all of it. We always think more muscle or more money solves the problem, but usually the answer is a tiny dumb thing we overlooked. The $180 was not for the scraper, it was for knowing where to put it. Painful lesson but at least your faucet lived.
