A guy at the hardware store in Reno laughed at my 2x4 spacers, and my deck is now 1.5 inches out of square
I was framing a small 10x12 deck behind my garage last weekend and using 2x4 scraps as spacers between joists, which is what my dad always did. An older guy in the aisle at the Reno Home Depot looked at my cart and said "those are gonna cup on you, buddy" and walked off. I ignored him because who does that. Three days later, after screwing down the last board, I stood back and saw the whole thing racked about 1.5 inches over 12 feet because the wet pressure treated 2x4s had warped between passes. Now I'm out $180 in lumber and a Saturday. Has anyone else had a random stranger's throwaway comment turn out to be dead right?
