Unpopular opinion: my $12 Harbor Freight angle grinder stand took 6 hours to fit right
I picked up the cheap drill press stand kit to turn my angle grinder into a baby chop saw, and getting the clamp to hold the grinder square took 6 hours of shimming and swearing in my garage in Boise. Turns out the base plate was warped about 3mm, so I had to shim the whole thing with cut up feeler gauges I had sitting in a coffee can. Now it cuts 1 inch square tube dead straight, but was it worth a whole Saturday? Has anyone else fought a cheap tool stand this hard or should I have just built the bracket from scratch?
Used to figure shimming a cheap stand was just wasted time and you should always fab your own bracket. Then I watched a buddy fight his homemade one for two weekends and end up with a crooked cut anyway, so your six hours actually sounds like the cheaper deal. For the price of a twelve dollar kit plus some feeler gauges you got a straight-cutting setup, and that beats burning a whole paycheck on steel and rod.
