Saw a guy in Portland driving a VW bus he clearly built himself, and it made me rethink my whole garage
Stopped at a gas station off I-5 in Portland last Saturday and a guy rolled up in a '71 VW bus with a roof rack he welded from scrap angle iron. He told me he bought the shell for $1,800 three years ago and did every bit of the work in his driveway, engine swap included. The interior had a sink and a bed frame he cut and fit himself, nothing pre-made or bolted on from a kit. I've been buying parts off the shelf for my own project for two years now and it kind of hit me how much I've been skipping. He said the whole thing cost him under $6k because he did the labor instead of writing checks. Anyone else ever get motivated by seeing someone else's hands-on build in person?
