Hot take: rewiring my $40 pawn shop guitar taught me more than 2 years of YouTube videos
Picked up a beat up Strat copy at a flea market in Austin last Saturday and spent all day Sunday swapping the pots and pickups myself. Sounds rough but it plays, so what's the one cheap gear fix you'd tell a total beginner to just try instead of buying new?
Reminds me of when I tried to fix the busted input jack on my old Squier and ended up melting half the wire with my soldering iron. Took me three tries to get it right but now I can rewire a jack in my sleep. The funny part is I learned way more from breaking stuff than from watching some guy on YouTube do it perfectly. My advice would be to just buy a cheap set of feeler gauges and learn to set your own action and intonation. It costs like ten bucks and once you get it you can make any cheap guitar play decent. Way better than paying someone sixty bucks for a setup on a guitar that's only worth forty.
