My uncle swore hostels were a scam, then I tried one in Lisbon for $19 a night
Back in 2016 my uncle Bill gave me a whole speech about how hostels were full of thieves and I should just sleep in my car to save cash. I ignored him and booked four nights at a place near the Alfama district for $19 a night, and it ended up being the best part of the trip because I split a taxi to Sintra with three people I met in the kitchen. He still brings up that one story about a guy whose backpack got lifted in Amsterdam, like that proves anything. So now I'm wondering, did I just get lucky with one good hostel, or is his advice from a totally different era of travel?
