Just realized I threw away 200 bucks on checked bags over 3 trips

I always paid for a carry on because I thought packing light meant wearing the same shirt for a week straight, until a hostel roommate in Lisbon showed me how she fit 10 days of clothes into a personal item bag using those vacuum bags. Now I'm torn, is it worth the hassle of doing laundry in a sink, or should I just eat the $35 fee and bring my normal stuff? Curious which side you all land on.
