Peeling paint on my trim got called out by a neighbor, now I prep differently

I used to just slap a fresh coat of paint over chipped baseboards, figured it was good enough for a rental. My neighbor, who flips houses, saw me doing it and said, 'You're just hiding the crime scene, not solving it.' He showed me how a $10 heat gun and a putty knife strips old layers in like 20 minutes per door frame. Tried it on my bedroom trim last weekend, took about 3 hours total for the whole room, and the finish actually looks smooth now. I also learned to sand with 120 grit first, not skip to 220, because that just polishes the old paint instead of biting into it. Anyone else have a cheap tool that totally changed their prep routine? Has anyone tried a chemical stripper that's actually worth the smell?
