A neighbor's throwaway comment changed how I paint rooms

Last Saturday I was touching up my hallway trim and my neighbor Bob walked by, saw the can of paint, and said "you know that cheap foam roller gives a better finish than any brush for stuff like that." I figured he was just being lazy, but I tried a 2 dollar roller set from the hardware store and the difference was wild. Same paint, same wall, but it looked smooth like a pro did it instead of my usual streaky mess. Has anyone else found a random tool that made their paint jobs way easier without upgrading the actual paint?
