My phone charger cable died at a bus stop in Portland, right when my battery hit 4%

Last Tuesday I was waiting for the 12 bus downtown and my phone was almost dead. I pulled out my charger, plugged it into the bank, and nothing happened. The cable had frayed right at the connector, the rubber was split and the wires were showing. I could see the copper bits touching each other, which explained the weird burning smell I noticed earlier. I checked the break history on that cable, it was 11 months old and I moved it between my desk and couch every single day. I ended up walking 20 minutes to a coffee shop with a dead phone, totally blind for directions. Has anyone else had a cable die at the worst possible second, or do I just have terrible luck with these things?
