3 years ago I had a USB plug jammed in so hard it snapped the port right off my laptop board
This was in my old apartment in Tucson, I was rushing to back up photos before a flight and yanked the drive sideways. Heard a crack, looked down, the whole port was hanging by two little solder points. I tried bending it back with needle nose pliers and it just fell off. Cost me $140 to get a shop to solder a new port on, and the guy said people do this all the time because they never pull straight. am I the only one who thinks right angle plugs should just be the default for anything that lives on a desk?

The thing nobody ever mentions is the cable side, not the port side. Even if you buy a right angle cable, the strain just moves to the jack on the cord and you end up with a dead cable in 6 months instead of a dead port. I went through 3 of those cheap right angle micro USB cords on my old external drive before I figured out the real fix is just leaving a short 6 inch extension plugged in permanent so the wear lands on a $4 part. That saved me from ever touching the laptop port again on my desk setup. So yeah right angle helps but the sacrificial short cable trick is what actually keeps the board alive.
