Just realized the guy at the salvage yard in Modesto was right about junkyard ECUs
Everybody on the cheap car forums swears you should never pull an ECU from a pick and pull because it might be flooded or fried, and I bought into that for a long time. But the guy running the counter at the yard off 9th Street told me he pulls at least 20 computers a month and only maybe one or two come back. So I grabbed a $35 ECU for my 97 Civic when mine started throwing a P0505 code, and it's been running fine for 4 months now. Way better than the $280 reman unit the parts store wanted, which is more than I paid for the whole car. The trick he showed me is to check for water lines on the case and pull the cover to sniff for burnt smell before you pay. I know this goes against the popular advice but half the people repeating that rule have never actually pulled one. Has anyone else had good luck with junkyard electronics or did I just get lucky?
