A buddy's snark about my patched headers actually fixed my exhaust leak
I spent three weekends with the same ticking noise on my 2002 Civic, slapping on more of that cheap exhaust putty and calling it good. My buddy Mike finally looked under the car at his place in Dayton and laughed, said the putty was just hiding the crack, not sealing it. He made me grind the spot clean, cut out the bad section, and weld in a proper patch pipe from a $25 junkyard muffler. Now the car sounds normal and my gas mileage went up by like 4 mpg after I stopped that leak. I used to think any repair that passed the ear test was fine, but his comment made me realize I was just ignoring the real problem. Who else has been told something obvious that made them step back and actually fix the root cause instead of the symptom?
Putty never fixes a crack, it just hides it long enough for you to forget. That junkyard patch pipe trick is solid, wish I had thought of that. Ticking noise over gas mileage, tough call but your buddy was right.
