Watching a guy in Tulsa rake his mortar bed before laying saved me 20 minutes a course
I used to trowel it flat and go, but he raked it into ridges first and the brick just settled into place, so has anyone else switched their bed prep after seeing someone else do it?
That thing about raking the bed into ridges reminds me of how a lot of little tricks work. Somebody shows you a slightly different way to move your hands and it just clicks, like when I watched a guy fold a fitted sheet without fighting it or saw a cook pinch salt instead of shaking it. The ridge thing makes sense too, because the mortar has somewhere to go when the brick presses down instead of just squishing out the sides. We spend years doing something one way, then one person does it a bit different and it saves you time every single day after that. Funny how that works.
