Pro tip: Stop watering your succulents every week like they're tomatoes

I killed 4 succulents in 6 months before I figured this out. My neighbor who runs a nursery finally told me flat out - most people drown their succulents. They need water like once every 2-3 weeks depending on your climate. I'm in Phoenix so even less. The leaves will wrinkle and get soft when they're actually thirsty. I check with a wooden skewer stuck in the dirt now. Has anyone else been overwatering forever without realizing it?
