Just read that a single mature oak can host over 500 different insect species

Saw that stat in a UK wildlife trust article last night and it blew my mind. Makes me think twice before I get annoyed at caterpillars munching on my trees - has anyone else noticed a huge difference in bird activity around oaks vs other trees?

Bet you never thought you'd be cheering on a bunch of caterpillars.

500 different insect species? That can't be right. A single oak tree hosting that many bugs sounds almost too crazy to believe. I've got a couple big oaks in my yard and I see tons of birds working them, but that number makes it sound like a whole ecosystem is hiding up in those branches. Maybe I've been underestimating how much life is going on right above my head.
