Got told my fern setup was "all wrong" at the plant swap in Boise, and honestly the guy had a point

He said I was burying the crown too deep on my Boston ferns, so I lifted all 6 of them about half an inch above the soil line and they finally stopped rotting at the base, has anyone else had luck with that or do you keep yours flush with the dirt?
