Appreciation post: the 200 year old oak on my street in Asheville taught me something about roots
A city arborist told me last month that the oak's roots spread almost 90 feet wide, way past the branches, which is why my little flower bed 40 feet from the trunk keeps drying out no matter how much I water it. I moved my bed 15 feet further out and the soil finally holds moisture. Has anyone else had to rethink planting spots because of a big old tree's root zone?
