A 12 year old's question about my potted fern made me question everything
I was explaining how I water it twice a week and she just asked 'but what does the plant want?' and honestly I had no real answer, I was just following a schedule. Has anyone else had a kid or someone new to plants stump them with a simple question that made them change how they grow stuff?

The "what does the plant want" thing got me too when my niece asked about my tomatoes. I realized I was just watering on a timer, not actually looking at the plant. Now I stick my finger in the soil up to the second knuckle, if it's dry an inch down I water, if it's damp I leave it alone. Also watch the leaves, if they droop a bit in the evening thats normal, but if they look sad in the morning thats a real sign its thirsty. That kid basically taught me to stop guessing and just read what the plant is telling you.
