PSA: An old tile guy in Fresno told me to double my price, and I almost laughed at him
Back when I first went solo doing floors, a guy named Ray who had been laying tile for like 30 years told me I was way too cheap and should double my rates. I thought he was nuts, so I ignored him and kept charging $2 a square foot for installs. Then I noticed I was always busy but broke, working 6 days a week and still stressing over rent in a small town outside Sacramento. One slow week I finally tried $4 a square foot on a bathroom job, and the homeowner didn't even blink, she just asked when I could start. Fast forward 8 months and I'm doing fewer jobs but actually taking home more, and I finally called Ray to admit he was right. Has anyone else had an old timer give them advice that sounded crazy but turned out to be spot on?
