DAE remember when the county clerk job paid $11/hr and nobody wanted it?

My uncle Ray worked as a records clerk for the city of Dayton for 34 years and he kept pushing me to apply back in 2009 because the pay was steady and the pension was solid. I laughed at him and took a job at a call center instead, thinking a desk full of paper files sounded like a slow death. He retired in 2018 with a full pension, health coverage for life, and a plaque, while I got laid off twice in that same stretch. Now I see clerk postings near me starting at $21/hr with the same boring filing and data entry, and I wonder if I blew it. Anyone here work a government records job and actually stick with it?

My cousin did the exact same thing you did, turned down a clerk gig in 2010, and honestly he's doing fine now. Not every office job is some golden ticket just cause it comes with a pension. Those clerk jobs can be dead boring, sure, but the bigger issue is you get stuck at that pay grade forever unless someone above you quits or dies. Meanwhile a call center gig taught you how to deal with people, and that skill moves with you anywhere. Your uncle got lucky with timing too, pensions for new hires got slashed all over the place after 2012. So you didn't blow some once in a lifetime shot, you just picked a different road, and those usually loop back around anyway lol.
