TIL wrapping my signatures in a wet towel before sewing stops the paper from tearing at the stations

After tearing the thread through the fold on three books in a row last month I tried damping the spine fold with a barely wet towel and poking the holes again, and 40 sheets sewed clean with zero rips, so now I want to know if anyone else does this or if I am just wrecking my paper long term.
