Nobody glues up the spine before rounding and it shows
I picked up a rebound 1908 hymnal at an estate sale in Omaha two weeks ago and the spine had that hollow crack sound when you open it. Turns out the guy who did it skipped the glue-up before rounding, so the signatures just slid around instead of forming a solid block. I've now seen this same mistake on four books from different sellers and every one of them falls apart at the hinge within a year or two. Anyone else noticing this shortcut getting passed off as normal practice lately?
