Just realized most people hinge their book cloth the wrong way

Watching a local binder's workshop last month and they were scoring the hinge right down the middle of the cloth fold. That puts the stress right on the board edge and the cloth tears after about 20 opens. I've been making my hinge lines about 8mm in from that fold for 5 years now and my journals from 2021 still open flat with zero cracking. Why are we still copying what the online tutorials show when the old binding manuals from the 60s clearly diagram it? Anyone else adjust their hinge placement after seeing covers fail early?
