Why does nobody mention the 15 page rule for book club fights

Three weeks back our club in Denver spent 40 minutes arguing about a character choice that turned out to be on page 212, which half the group had skipped. Now we all agree on a stopping point before the meeting and the fights are actually about the book instead of who read what. Does your club set a page limit or do you just let people show up wherever they are?
