Reading order fights split my book club into two camps

Last month we debated whether to read the prequel before the main series, and it got so heated two members walked out. I think reading chronologically ruins the author's intended reveals, but now the club votes on book order every meeting. Has anyone else had a format debate like this ruin the fun?

My book club banned me from suggesting anything by Terry Pratchett after I pitched the Discworld series in publication order and spent twenty minutes explaining why Guards! Guards! was the real starting point. We lost three members that night. Now I just show up, eat the snacks, and pretend to have opinions about whatever graphic novel someone picked. The only thing more dangerous than a prequel debate is a grown man arguing about fictional footnotes. You have my sympathy, but also maybe suggest a book about conflict resolution next month.
