Question about the guy at my library book club who keeps calling every unreliable narrator a "liar"
Honestly, I have been in the same Tuesday night book club at the Richmond library for 8 months now and this one dude derails every single meeting. Last week we did Gone Girl and he spent 20 minutes insisting Amy was just a plain liar, which misses the entire point of an unreliable narrator. The difference matters because if you call them liars you stop asking why the book hides things from you on purpose. Ngl, I finally snapped and read aloud the line about how she framed it as a game, and two other people backed me up. Tbh I think he just wants every book to be a simple cop story with a bad guy. Has anyone else dealt with a club member who flattens every twist into "they lied, the end"?
My old sci fi club had a guy who did something close to this but with plot holes instead of liars. Every meeting he would pull out a notebook and read off stuff like how in Dune nobody explains the spice pricing, and he would act like he cracked the book wide open. One night the host just started nodding along and agreeing with every complaint until the guy ran out of steam, and after that he barely talked. Not sure that trick works on everyone but it was something to watch.
