In my experience, our book club debate fell apart when someone took a character's choice way too personally. How do you deal with that kind of clash?

Remember when we argued over that depressing book and ended up debating reality TV shows?

Ugh, I get that. We had a huge fight over a book where a character cheated, and one member basically started yelling at anyone who tried to talk about the story reasons for it. What worked for us was just calling a time out. Like, someone said "hey, let's table this part and talk about the setting for a minute," and after we cooled down we could circle back. Sometimes you just need a break from the hot topic to let feelings chill.
