Bought the fancy annotated version of a classic for book club. Wish I'd saved my $38.

I grabbed the 800 page annotated Moby Dick for our group's September pick because everyone said the footnotes were key, but I barely used them and the main text is the same as the free library copy. My book club spent two hours arguing about whether the annotations actually added anything or just made us feel smarter, and half of us admit we skimmed past them. Has anyone else dropped serious cash on a special edition and then realized the plain paperback would've been fine for the discussion?

Buddy of mine dropped $60 on a leather-bound Lord of the Rings set for a re-read and the spine cracked on page 40, plus the maps were blurry compared to his old paperback. He ended up borrowing my beat-up copy for the actual reading.
