Book club split over whether the narrator in chapter 7 was lying

At our meeting last Tuesday, half the room thought the narrator in chapter 7 was lying about the letter and the other half thought she was telling the truth. It got so heated that two people almost walked out over one line on page 214. I ended up timing the debate, it took us 38 minutes before we could even vote on anything else. Has anyone else had a single scene torpedo a whole book club night like that?
