A 30 year hand told me to quit stacking my passes so hot, and he was dead right
Said I was cooking the puddle and pulling slag into the next bead on that 2 inch header, so I dropped my amps about 15 and the X-ray came back clean. Anybody else get told their heat was the problem when they swore it was their travel speed?
Did the guy ever mess with his rod angle before he touched the heat? Had a buddy on a pipeline job who swore up and down his heat was fine, kept blaming his travel speed. Foreman finally watched him run a cap and told him his rod was leaned too far back, which was dragging the puddle and trapping slag at the toe. He tipped it up a hair, left his amps alone, and his next few joints shot clean. Funny how it's almost never the one thing we're sure it is.
