A 30 year guy on my crew asked why I still roll tubes by hand, so I tried his way for 2 weeks
I been rolling tubes the same way since I started in 1998 at a shop in Toledo. My old foreman always said hand rolling gives you a feel for the seat that a machine cant. About 3 weeks ago a guy on my crew with 30 years in watched me fight a stubborn 2 inch tube for 20 minutes and just said 'youre working harder than the tool needs you to.' He showed me how he sets the expander and does a short burnish pass first, then a full roll after. First day I tried it I got 12 tubes done in the time it used to take me for 5, and the torque readings were dead on. Still do my hand pass on the last quarter turn because thats just how I was taught. Any of you old guys switch over to the burnish first method or do you still run it straight through?
