Why does everyone think Catan is still the best gateway game?

I went to a game night last Friday with some coworkers and someone pulled out Catan. I get it, it was huge in the 2000s but the dice rolling randomness just ruins it for a lot of new players. My buddy spent 45 minutes with no brick or ore and just sat there doing nothing. There are way better intro games now like Cascadia or Ticket to Ride that don't punish a bad dice roll. Has anyone else noticed this or am I the only one who thinks Catan is overrated for 2025?

Buddy of mine tried Catan for the first time at a game cafe. Spent the whole game stuck on a 2 and a 12 for resources. Just stared at his phone while everyone else built roads. He left saying board games are stupid and won't touch them now. Real shame because he would have loved something like Cascadia where bad luck doesn't wreck your whole night.
