I finally understood why people hate 'take that' games at a con in Chicago
I was at a big board game convention in Chicago last year, playing a new area control game with a group of strangers. One guy kept targeting me with every negative card, saying 'it's just part of the game' while I was clearly getting frustrated and falling behind. It completely killed my mood and I left the table early. Now I'm way more careful about reading the room before suggesting competitive games with new people. How do you handle players who take the 'take that' mechanic way too personally?

Man, that's the worst. I just straight up say "dude, you're only hitting me, it's not fun anymore." If they keep it up, I'll leave the game. Life's too short for bad game nights.

Ugh, that guy sounds like the worst. I've been there. My rule now is to call it out early, right when the targeting starts. I'll just say, "Hey, feels like I'm getting piled on, can we mix it up?" in a light tone. If they don't stop, I finish the game but never play with them again. Some people just get a kick out of ruining the game for one person, and that's their problem, not yours. Protecting your own fun means walking away from tables like that.
