Picked a 100 lb anvil over a new gas forge and I'm still not sure I chose right
Six months back I had about $800 saved up and I could only spend it on one upgrade for my shop in my garage outside of Tacoma. It came down to a used 100 lb Peter Wright anvil or a new single burner gas forge. I went with the anvil because my old one was a beat up 55 lb harbor freight job that bounced my hammer and rang like a cracked bell. First month was rough, I had to learn to work hot steel differently since I was so used to the gas forge at the community shop, so I built a little coal box out of firebrick and a brake drum. After about three weeks I finally got the fire management down and my hammer control got way better because that anvil just soaks up the blows and sends it all back into the work. I do not regret it but man, forging with coal in the winter when it is 35 degrees and drizzling is a whole different job than flipping a switch on a gas forge. Now I am saving up again for the forge, probably another 4 months of side work at this rate. For the guys who have both, do you actually use your solid fuel setup in the colder months or do you just park it until spring?
