Old timer at the Puyallup fair told me my tongs were too long

I was working a demo booth at the Puyallup fair last month and an old timer watched me fight a pair of 18 inch tongs for about 20 minutes. He said "son, your tongs should fit your hand and your fire, not your pride" and handed me his 13 inchers to try on the spot. Has anyone else had a length or style tip from a stranger completely change how they work at the anvil?
