Warning: I just saw a customer's bike go from 'fine' to 'dangerous' in under a month because of one part

A guy brought his mountain bike in for a quick check after a muddy ride about four weeks ago. The chain was a bit dirty, but it shifted okay and we just gave it a basic clean. He came back today and the chain was completely shot, stretched way past the 0.75% mark on my gauge. The real kicker was the cassette, it had worn down so much the new chain just skipped under any real pressure. The mud acted like grinding paste and just ate the drivetrain alive. Has anyone else seen wear happen that fast from just one really dirty ride?

Yeah, mud can absolutely wreck a drivetrain that fast.
