Torque wrench calibration, I was using it wrong for 3 years

I had this old Park Tool torque wrench I trusted for everything, carbon posts, stem bolts, the whole deal. Last week I was doing a carbon seatpost install and it felt off, like the click came way too late. So I borrowed my buddy's digital torque wrench and checked mine against it. Turns out mine was clicking at like 7nm when I set it to 5nm. All that time I was overtorquing stuff and never knew. What tipped me off was a creak in the saddle that would not go away no matter how many times I retorqued. I always thought the click meant it was good, but the wrench had been dropped too many times on the shop floor. Anyone else had a torque tool silently drift out of spec like that, and how do you check yours without dropping crazy money on calibration?
