A guy at the shop mentioned his grandma's percolator and it got me thinking about my first setup
Stopped by a small roaster in Boise last month and the guy behind the counter said his grandma ran a percolator on the stove for 40 years and never weighed a thing. Got me thinking about my own start, a $20 drip maker from a Walmart in 2009 and a blade grinder that turned beans into dust. These days I have a burr grinder and a scale and the coffee is better, no doubt. But sometimes I wonder if I lost something in the upgrade. Anyone here still keep an old percolator around just for the ritual?
That line about his grandma running a percolator for 40 years and never weighing a thing really got me. There's something to that, you know? She probably knew that pot like the back of her hand, how many scoops, how long on the flame, when it was done just by the sound and smell. My question is this: when you think back on that $20 drip maker, was the coffee actually worse, or did you just not know any better yet? Because I've had plenty of "bad" cups that hit the spot better than a perfect pour over on a rough morning. Do you miss the taste, or do you miss not caring so much about getting it right?
