Tried the snake method on my 22 inch kettle after 3 racks came out dry

Setting up a ring of unlit coals with just 8 briquettes lit on one end held my Oklahoma Joe at 250 for 6 hours straight, so what is everyone's go-to split size when you need to add wood without spiking the temp?
