Old offset smoker taught me a cheap trick for steady temps

My 20 year old offset always swung 50 degrees unless I babysat it, so I tried hanging a scrap piece of sheet metal inside the firebox door to deflect the airflow. It sounds goofy but it held 250 for 3 hours straight at a cookout in Austin last weekend. Has anyone else rigged up a simple baffle like that?
