PSA: Stop Trusting Coupon Apps for Groceries, I Tracked Every Price for a Month in Denver and Lost Money
I spent the last 30 days in Denver scanning every grocery coupon app I could find, and the so called savings are mostly fake. Here is what I found. I clipped 84 digital coupons across three apps, and 61 of them were for items I never buy unless the app puts them in front of me. That is not saving money, that is the app deciding what I want. One app offered me 50 cents off a 6 dollar bag of chips I would never grab at full price. I added it to my cart just to test it, and my total for that trip was 14 dollars higher than my normal run. The apps also rotate offers so fast that half of what you clip expires in 3 days, which pushes you to go back and buy more. I finally deleted all of them and went back to just reading the weekly flyer taped to my fridge. Has anyone else tracked their spending with these apps and seen it go up instead of down?
