Three weeks for a $2 cable, old VGA adapters are cursed

I dug out my 2004 ThinkPad to show my nephew some retro games, but the screen output was garbage. The VGA to HDMI adapter I bought for $9 kept flickering and cutting out every few minutes. Turns out the adapter needed external power, which the laptop's port couldn't give it. I tried three different drivers, two operating systems, and one very long night before I read a forum post from 2011. The fix was a $2 powered splitter I ordered off eBay, and it took three weeks total to figure out. Anyone else have a simple cable ruin their whole retro setup for way too long?

Ever notice how the cheapest part of any retro setup is always the one that eats your whole weekend? I swear these adapters have a sixth sense for when you're most desperate. Three weeks is rough, but at least you got there. I had a similar fight with a DVI cable once, ended up using a paperclip and some tape out of pure spite. The real kicker is that the fix was always sitting there in some dusty forum from 2011. Retro tech is basically a lesson in patience, except the lesson costs you $2 and three weeks of your life.
