My uncle's advice about floppy disks was dead wrong in 2024

My uncle Dave has been in IT since the 80s. He swore that keeping a box of 3.5 inch floppies was 'insurance' because "data always comes back around." Last month I found a reader at a thrift store in Portland for $8, plugged it in via USB, and tried to pull family photos he stored back in 1998. Out of 47 disks, exactly 2 read. The magnetic coating had basically flaked off the rest. His theory about data never dying was 30 years old and totally useless. Anyone else hang onto obsolete media because an older relative swore it mattered?
