Found a working 1998 Compaq at a garage sale, the BIOS battery was the easy part
It had 64MB of RAM and a 4GB drive, but Windows 98 wouldn't boot past the splash screen. Turns out the CMOS battery leak had corroded two traces on the motherboard, so I traced them with a multimeter and soldered jumper wires. Has anyone else fixed a board this old with just wire and patience, or is that a lost art?

Did you fix the leak damage, or just slap wires over it?
