A dude at the Kent swap meet laughed at me for still burning CDs, then asked if I knew about the hidden track trick
I was digging through a $2 bin of blank discs last Saturday and this guy next to me said nobody wants physical media anymore, then he showed me how old CD players read a pregap track before track 1 that most rippers skip right over. I went home and tried it on my 1998 Discman and sure enough there was a whole 40 second intro hiding there that I never heard in 20 years of listening. How many of you have found stuff like that on old discs that the digital copy just erased?

That "pregap track before track 1" thing got me because I had the same deal with a Bjork CD from like 1997. My old boombox would sit there with the track display showing -0:03 and I always figured it was just the player being weird, but one day I let it play and there was this little hum and her voice all low saying something I could not make out. Ripped it to my laptop years later and poof, gone, iTunes just started at track 1 like nothing happened. I ended up having to rip the whole disc as one long file to get it back, which was a pain but worth it. Nobody talks about how much stuff got quietly cut when we all moved to mp3s, not just hidden tracks either but little gaps and lead-ins that were part of the album on purpose. Makes me want to dig out my old discs and just play them straight through again, weird players and all.
