My tomato plants survived a 3 day heatwave, barely
Last week in Austin we hit 104 degrees and my balcony turned into an oven. I had 6 tomato pots and 2 of them completely wilted by noon on day 2, even with morning watering. I rigged up a shade cloth from an old bedsheet and moved the pots against the north wall, which saved the other 4. Has anyone else dealt with balcony temps getting way higher than the forecast, and what do you use to cool things down?

That bit about the balcony running way hotter than the forecast is the part people miss, because the thermometer on the news is reading air temp in the shade over grass, not the sun bouncing off your railing and walls. A cheap oven thermometer sitting in one of the pots will show you the real number, and I bet it reads 10 to 15 degrees higher than your phone says. Once you know that gap, you stop trusting the forecast for your plants and just water and shade based on what the pot itself is telling you.
