Gram's index card recipe box finally got me off the phone after 12 years
My grandma gave me her old wooden recipe box when I moved into my first apartment in 2012, and I shoved it in a cabinet and forgot about it. For 12 years I did all my baking off screens, scaling recipes in apps and swiping past ads. Last Saturday I finally sat down and went through that box, and there were 40 years of index cards in there, some with butter stains and notes in the margins like "cut sugar to 3/4, Mom likes it less sweet." I baked her coffee cake that afternoon straight off a card, and I caught myself reading the same line three times because I couldn't just pinch to zoom. The cake came out fine, but I'll admit I missed my timer apps. How many of you still bake off paper cards, and do you write down your own tweaks or just keep it in your head?
