My roommate swore cash only for rent was normal, turns out his Venmo was just frozen
When I moved into a 3 bedroom in Austin, my roommate Marcus said we all had to pay rent in cash because his landlord was "old school" and would not take checks. I thought that was weird but went along with it for 4 months, handing him $650 every first of the month. Turns out his Venmo got locked after some chargeback mess and he was just covering it up the whole time. Has anyone else had a roommate make up a rule like this to hide something?
I get why people are mad but honestly the lie bugs me more than the Venmo thing. Dude had a whole cover story ready and kept it going for 4 months while you handed him cash every month. That's not a small fib, that's him deciding you don't deserve to know where your money is actually going. And here's the part people skip, cash has zero paper trail, so if Marcus ever "forgot" you paid, you'd have nothing to show. Old school landlord rule is one thing, but your roommate being the middleman for your rent is the real red flag.
